Chao's Future?
« on: March 15, 2006, 11:40:13 am »
As you have all very well noticed, the concept of going to Chao Island to rise and take care of Chao ended after Sonic Adventure 2: Battle.

But what if they would have included a new version of Chao World in Sonic Heroes? Or Shadow the Hedgehog? What do you think SEGA and Sonic Team would have improved on if this had occured?

What if they has included Chao in Sonic Riders? Yes, I mean Chao riding tiny boards and doing tricks (funny enough, I can only picture the three Chaos Chao doing so).

And finally, what do you think Chao would be like in the next-gen graphics for the new games coming out for the X-Box360, PS3, and the Revolution? Do you think Chao will ever truly have life in the games again?

I think Chao, as a gameplay concept, was an idea that was created in the Adventure series and should be left in the Adventure series. No main, home console game since then has really been the environment for Chao. Then again, Sonic Team do tend to keep hold of game aspects for much longer than they should... so I don't see why they didn't with Chao.

Well, I think Chao would do quite well outside of the Adventure games, but only if they are presented in a different way then they were. I honestly wish they would have placed the three Chaos Chao in Sonic Riders as unlockable characters. It would have been awsome to see the Light Chaos as speed, the Angel Chaos as flight, and thr Devil Chaos as power, all on little boards created for them by Tails.

As for Chao in future games, I really hope they bring them back at some point. Chao would do amazingly well with the newer graphics. Also, they would be able to completely reinvent the concept of rising your Chao to seem a little less child like, yet still have them remain in the "cute" zone.

I don't have a problem with that, but I'd place one restriction on it.

DON'T MAKE IT BLOODY NECESSARY TO USE THEM TO COMPLETE THE GAME!!!

I completely agree with that. They should just be things to help you destress after dying a thousand times.

Chao are the most flagrant example of the Adventure series' tendency to throw together random gameplay concepts with no unifying thread whatsoever. Taking them out was the best improvement they could've made.

In other words, you didn't take to the concept of raising Chao?

I've got mixed feelings about Chao. On one hand, Chao raising being required to get all of the emblems royally pissed me off. On the other hand, I started getting attached to the little dragon/phoenix hybrid I was raising once I started to sit down and started doing it. Chao should be either a non-required mini game or just a useful plot device that fleshes out some of the details of the Sonic series story line.
Ever know what its like to get pwned by a book? Sonic certainly does.

I would have to agree that having the Chao be necessary to get all of the emblems was and is a royal pain but after you start to spend more than ten minutes with your Chao, they really begin to grow on you. Well, at least that's what it's like for me. Sure, they are rediculas and they make me wonder what SEGA was on when Chao were first created, but ... they are so adorable you can't help but love them.

Nono, this is adorable:

Chao are odd creatures. Not to mention that they are spawn of the 'god of destruction'.

I rest my case! *rests case*

Are you refering to the Devil Chaos Chao? Or just any Chao that has a flame above it's head, because of the Alien-Fish animal?

I believe that both the Hero and Devil Chaos Choa had a fireball floating above thier head. I think the difference was color. It's been awhile since I've seen one. I never got one but a friend of mine did.

Actually, only the Devil Chaos has the flame. The Angel Chao has a bright yellow halo and the Light (neutral) Chaos has a glowing ball.

-Chao are nice as a mini-game, not as a way to get the last few emblems.
I played all the way through SA2B and got every emblem... just to find out
that I would have to raise a second Chao to get through the Dark Race.
(If I had known, I would have gotten a neutral Chao.)
I used the reusable animals trick for both, and I barely got the Dark one fast enough.
(I had to retry the races a few times before I could win.)
Now, I have a Chao that I visit once in a while with any character, and
I just use any items and animals (and I don't cheat). It's actually kind of fun now.

-With better graphics... they'll still look sloppy. SEGA didn't bother to smooth them
out for GameCube, and it will probably be the same thing next time (if there is a next time).
They might look better than on Dreamcast, but I'm sure they'll be at least as blocky
as they'd be on the weakest of the (up to) 3 systems the game is released for.

-SEGA will probably just simplify and wreck the Chao system more.
Look at what they did to SADX! Some features are missing, and speed boosts
in races are completely random (but it still says to watch the stamina bar and
use boosts carefully). Oh, and they'll do something like this:
300 emblems!            Sonic stages (which are less fun than before): 25 emblems
sloppy stages: 75 emblems            garbage stages (Big, Knuckles): 100 emblems
Chao and stuff: 100 emblems

I enjoyed the Chao, but I don't think the console-form was as good as others... I think that the DC cards had it best, as something you can do for Sonic-related stuff while you're at school (I like Advance, but I'm not really an N fan)

I liked it... a little tedius sometimes, but always fun

I would have to greatly agree that having your Chao in the DreamCast memory card was fun. I liked that fact that you could increase it's luck and intellegence through there (which would help out in the races for the item selection and the Jack-in-the-Box). Though I like it better in the GameCube version how your Chao has 50%/50% for luck, and it usually has really good intellegence.

I would have to admit, I thought that the Chao Karatie was going to be hard for me to sit through, but when I actually saw it for the first time, I thought it was not only awsome, but so cute! I still think the three Chaos Chao should have been in Sonic Riders. > <
